“şimendifer", a borrowed word from French (“chemin de fer”), literally means “iron road” and was the Ottoman Turkish word for “railroad” or “locomotive.”
And, "şimendifer" is an art project through which I design and build conceptual structures. Blending the mechanical into the organic, I use old watch parts and wood of any kind to achieve a visually aesthetic result.
While referring to the past with the name of the project and using pieces of past technology like mechanical watch parts and conventional materials like wood, I seek to create an alternate reality.
My work translates this conceptual alternate reality into tangible objects, but it still produces pieces that do not "work" literally as machines do; they “work” visually.
